Windmills took wind energy and harnessed it to rotate millstones for crushing and grinding grain. With the advent of electricity, windmills became redundant. As they are unusual and attractive many were put to other uses, thus rescuing a historical part of our heritage which would otherwise have been lost throuigh decay. By converting them to dwellings, some examples of which have the original machinary preserved, unique propertys have been created. As planning departments become more concerned with keeping the structure as intact as possible, modern conversions are generally very sympathetically carried out, with some maintaining the energy creating part of their building to produce their own electricity.

windmill conversion for sale
The Windmill, Blackthorn Hill, Blackthorn, Oxon, OX25 1TJ
Guide Price £395,000
Blackthorn Windmill
Believed to date from the 18th century, this tower windmill at Old Mill Farm, Blackthorn was once fully clad in tiles and had a copper roof. The copper roof was lost in 1942 for the war effort, and the windmill remained roofless until 1998, when it was sympathetically converted into the two bedroom house it is today. There are many great features including circular rooms, exposed beams and stonework and the flexible accommodation is arranged over five floors. The sitting room on the top floor benefits from wonderful 360 degree panoramic views over the surrounding farmland and outside is a large detached garage and gardens. At present the windmill is small but perfectly formed but as it has planning permission for a ground floor extension (which will provide a generous kitchen / breakfast room), this ever evolving property is set to metamorphosise yet again into a great family home. more
