Cob is an ancient building material that may have been used for building since prehistoric times. It consists of a mixture of clay, sand, straw, water, and earth which is ladled on to a stone foundation in layers and trodden on to the wall by workers , a process known as “cobbing” with each layer having to dry out before the next course is built. Inexpensive and ecofriendly, the walls of a cob house are generally about 24 inches thick, providing thermal mass which is easy to keep warm in winter and cool in summer.

Ottery St Mary Cob House
Ecofriendly, comfortable and economic to live in, the thick walls in cob houses provide thermal mass making it easy to keep warm in winter and cool in summer. Keppel Gate is a three storey house built of cob which has featured in the Telegraph and on TV. It was built by the owner / vendor, Kevin McCabe, one of the leading proponents of cobbing in the country who has a fabulous reputation for building bespoke properties. The house has four reception rooms and five bedrooms and is full of character with curving walls, broad spiralling staircases and has top-spec finishes throughout. There's also a sizeable two-storey detached annexe, garage and barn, all built of cob and the whole is set in about two acres of gardens with orchard, a wood-fired pizza oven (cob, of course) and pasture paddocks. The property is situated at the end of a quiet no-through-road, less than a mile from Ottery St Mary in East Devon and as the owner is currently in the process of building another cob house for himself next door, you'll always have a builder on hand! more
