Binnewith Island For Sale
It's not often an island within a city comes on the market but Binnewith Island, a unique half acre riverside plot situated within Canterbury city walls, is for sale.

One of the last pieces of undeveloped land in the city, it's a site of great local historical interest. The whole Greyfriars area was once something of a mecca for Franciscan monks and a group of friars were given the island in 1224, in order to establish their chapel.

Lying between two spurs of the Great Stour River, adjacent to Greyfriars Gardens, the overgrown island can be accessed either via the gardens or by a footpath off Water Lane. It measures 0.47 acres (0.2 Hectares) and has the remains of a dilapidated building.

Although there's no planning permission at present, the island has the potential to be suitable for a variety of commercial or residential uses, (subject to all the necessary consents being obtained).

Binnewith actually means "within the willows" a name which evokes pleasant summertime visions of messing around on the river. Binnewith Island has great potential to be a haven of tranquility within the city centre.
